Lighters

Broad Question

Witch lighter starts a Fire the best ?

Specific Question

Will a butane a metal rod lighter or a magnesium rod lighter start a fire the best?

Hypothesis

I hypothesize the butane lighter will light a fire the best.Next would be the magnesium lighter and last would be the metal rod lighter.

Variables
Independent Variable:
Lighter Type

Dependent Variable:

Time (Sec)

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Experimental Design

I will do my project at my house outside. There will be three subject that will be involved with me project. There will be ten trails for my project to find the average time for each lighter. I will record my data on a spreed sheet . I plan to write out my data on a google speed sheet.

materials list
1. Stop watch
2.Metal rod
3.Magnesium rod
4.Butane lighter
5.Dry grass
6.Water

Procedure

1.Go to the store .
2.Buy materials .
3.Bring them home.
4.Do the project outside .
5.Get the stop watch ready .
6.Light the metal rod and put the sparks in the dry grass.
7. Then stop the timer when there is a fire.
8.Then put out the fire with water.
9. Then do the same procedure with the different lighter

Background Research

  1. If there’s no fire ring, start with a flat area at least 10 feet away from tents, trees, roots and other flammable items.
  2. Clear a space 24 to 32 inches in diameter, and dig a few inches into the ground if possible. This will keep the fire contained.
  3. Butane is a gas with the formula C4H10
  4. At high temperatures with oxygen, alkanes do burn and release lots of heat energy
  5. there are different types of hea chemical heat , natual heat.

Data Analysis

Conclusion

The original purpose of this expreiment was to See which was best lighter to start a fire. The results of the experiment were that the butane lighter 0:52 lit the fire the best, then the magnesium rod 2:25 and lastly the metal rod 3:16.

Discussion

My hypothesis was that the butane lighter would light the fire faster than the magnesium rod and the metal match. My hypothesesis supports my Results. There is a relationship between the independent and dependent vsrisbles. Some patterns and trends in my data show that the butane lighter has least time for it to start a fire. I think my test went smothy with minor problems. I had a hard time lighting the fires with the metal rod and the magnesium rod. If I could improve my experemt I would change what I am tested. I would use a flint , butane, and a metal match. An intersting future study might involve having to see what the temperature of the fire is when it starts.
